Letterbook of the USS Constitution, September 15, 1848 to August 25, 1849, containing retained copies of correspondence written by Captain John Gwinn and others, while the ship was part of the Mediterranean Squadron. Early entries are concerned with the workings of the ship. After the death of Commodore Bolton of the Squadron in April 1849, Gwinn becomes the most senior officer and the correspondence then involves politics of the Mediterranean. The focus of the latter part of the correspondence is the efforts of the U. S. and other countries to contain the revolts occurring in Italy and other parts of Europe at the time, and to protect U. S. citizens abroad.
